Hen grit - essential for poultry digestion because lacking teeth hens use it in their gizzard to grind food into digestible particles. 

There are two types: insoluble hard grit, like flint, aids digestion by grinding, while soluble soft grit (like oyster shell) provides calcium for strong eggs and bones. While free-ranging birds find grit naturally, confined birds need a constant supply in a separate feeder to prevent blockages and ensure proper nutrient absorption.

Why hens need grit
  • No teeth: Hens do not have teeth, so they cannot chew their food.
  • Gizzard function: They swallow food whole, which is then moved to their gizzard, a muscular organ that acts like a grinding mill
  • Digestive aid: Grit provides the necessary abrasive material for the gizzard to grind food, breaking it down into smaller, digestible pieces.

This is typically made of materials like flint or quartz. It remains in the gizzard and performs the physical grinding of food
